Knicks Lose to Clippers 116-108, Slip to One Over .500 by Derrel “Jazz” Johnson

Last night’s game between the New York Knicks and the Los Angeles Clippers featured three of the top five National Basketball Association dunk leaders with Blake Griffin, DeAndre Jordan, and Amar’e Stoudemire.  The Clippers duo didn’t disappoint, as dominated their way to 58 of their 116 points in the paint, including seven dunks from Jordan and five from Griffin, as the Clippers defeated the Knicks 116-108 at Madison Square Garden.

After the game was tied at 35, the Clippers went on a 21-6 run to go up by 15 after a lay up by Clippers point guard Baron Davis.  The Clippers would go up by as much as 20, 84-64, on a three pointer by Randy Foye with 3:20 left in the third quarter.  The Knicks would cut the lead to three on a dunk by Amar’e Stoudemire, his first of the game, 99-96 with 5:41 left in the quarter, but  15-6 run by the Clippers would put the game away.

Knicks head coach Mike D’Antoni was very critical of his team.  “We just did not come to play in the first half.  You could see it on their faces.  It was the energy level mostly on the defensive end.  The effort was just not good enough.  It was total lack of commitment on our part.”  Stoudemire agreed with his coach.  “Lack of focus, it was just that simple.”  Raymond Felton echoed the same thoughts.  “We did not play with any energy.”  Toney Douglas talked about responsibility.  “We all have to be accountable.  You can’t coach effort, energy, and heart.”

Stoudemire led the Knicks with 23 points, 5 rebounds and 2 assists, while Danilo Gallinari scored 21, with 5 rebounds.  Timofey Mozgov scored 18 points and grabbed 6 rebounds, and Felton recorded his 22nd double-double of the season with 17 points and 12 assists.  Douglas scored 12 points and Wilson Chandler 11, both off the bench.

Blake Griffin was excited to snap the team’s seven-game road losing streak.  “It was huge for us, especially on this road trip.  We started 03 and we wanted to get a win especially against a team like New York.  The thing I liked most about it is the way we played and how everyone contributed.”

Randy Foye led the Clippers with 24, 17 which came in the fourth quarter.  Baron Davis scored 16 points and dished out a season-high 16 assists, while all-star rookie Blake Griffin scored 21 points.  Jordan scored 17 and pulled down 8 rebounds, and Ryan Gomes scored 18.  Eric Bledsoe came of the bench to add 16.
