Jets Scalp Chiefs, 37-10 by Derrel “Jazz” Johnson

Quarterback Mark Sanchez became the first player in team history to throw for two touchdowns and run for two touchdowns as the New York Jets played perhaps their best game of the season in dominating the Kansas City Chiefs in a 37-10 win at Met Life Stadium.

The game got off to a weird start, with the Jets calling a timeout before running an offensive play after a kick return by Antonio Cromartie, but they quickly stormed down the field on 11 plays for 77 yards to take a 7-0 lead on a Mark Sanchez run, and they would never look back.

After the teams traded three and outs, the Kansas City Chiefs would score on a 53-yard field goal by Ryan Succup. The score would remain 7-3 until the Jets scored a touchdown on a 4-yard Sanchez to Santonio Holmes throw. The Jets were given a short field by an interception by Jim Leonhard, who suffered a knee injury on the play and may be out for the rest of the season. The Jets would score a touchdown on their next possession on a seven-yard run by Shonn Greene to take a 21-3 lead.

After Leonhard’s punt return replacement Jeremy Kerley returned the ball 26 yards on a punt, the Jets scored again on a 19-yard pass from Sanchez to LaDainian Tomlinson and the Jets took a 28-3 lead. Mark Sanchez would score his second rushing touchdown of the game and the Jets took a 35-3 lead. The Chiefs scored their first and only touchdown in the fourth quarter on a pass from quarterback Tyler Palko to Jerheme Urban to make it a 35-10 game. The Jets would score the final points of the game when Sione Pouha tackled Jackie Battle in the end zone for a 37-10 Jets lead.

Sanchez finished the game 13-21 for 181 yards and two touchdown passes and two rushing touchdowns. Greene finished with 129 yards rushing on 24 carries and 58 yards on three receptions, and Tomlinson finished with 50 yards on two receptions.

“I was happy we had another opening-drive touchdown. It set the tone early, and we converted on some big third downs and didn’t get too many third downs, which was good. We had some explosive plays and the run game really took off” Mark Sanchez said after the game. Jets head coach Rex Ryan agreed with my assessment of it being the best game of the season. “I guess it would be our best game so far this year,” Ryan said.

The Jets head down the New Jersey Turnpike to face the Philadelphia Eagles Sunday.

  1. Bobby Charts says:

Much needed win for Jets, it only takes one to get things rolling! Big game next week!

  2. It seems like Tomlinson’s become more of a pass-catcher than a rusher. Finally the Jets get a win, well deserved too.
