The eight-team inaugural Caribbean Volleyball League will serve off today at the Jean Pierre Sports Complex, Mucurapo. There will be a men’s match between Glamorgan and Big SEPOS at noon, followed by a 2 pm battle between Defence Force and Technocrats in the women’s division. The opening ceremony is due to take place at 6 pm, followed by a women’s meeting between UTT and Glamorgan at 7 pm, and a men’s duel between Technocrats and Defence Force two hours later. Tomorrow, the Corpus Christi holiday, will have another set of matches to entice the local volleyball fans. The semi-finals will be contested on Saturday while the finals, as well as the third-place play-offs, will take place on Sunday.
In track and field news, Semoy Hackett from Trinidad will compete in the 2012 NCAA Division 1 Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Des Moines, Iowa, beginning today and ending on Saturday. Hackett will compete in the 100m, 200m and the 4x100m events for Louisiana State University. The Bishops High graduate is making her second trip to the NCAA Division 1 finals and will be aiming to improve on her 6th place finish in the 200m finals last year. She will also be looking to match her success at the Division 2 championships where she struck double gold in the 100m and 200m in 2009 and 2010 while a student at Lincoln University before transferring to LSU. Trinidadian Kai Selvon will also compete in the 100m, 200m and 4x100m for Auburn University.
Novak Djokovic defeated Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in a five-set classic yesterday to advance to the French Open Semi finals. Djokovic faced four match points in the fourth set, before winning the set 7-6, then dominated the fifth set 6-1. He will face Roger Federer in the semifinals, who defeated Juan Martin del Potro. Andy Murray and Rafael Nadal, who just celebrated his 26th birthday Sunday, will play today for a chance to join Djokovic and Federer in the semifinals.
Paul Pierce nailed a 25-foot three-pointer over LeBron James 52.9 seconds left in the game that put Boston up by four, the eventual margin of victory. The Celtics will attempt to end the season of the favored Miami Heat tomorrow in Boston and advance to the NBA Finals. The Oklahoma City Thunder look to eliminate the San Antonio Spurs tonight and advance to the NBA Finals in game six of the Western Conference Finals.
Russell Martin hit a grand slam and Andy Pettitte pitched 7 1/3 shutout innings as the New York Yankees scorched the Rays 7-0. The New York Mets lost to the Washington Nationals in 12 innings yesterday, 7-6.
