The New Jersey Devils were eliminated yesterday when they lost to the Los Angeles Kings, who are now the Stanley Cup Champions. After losing the first three games of the series, the Devils won games four and five, but went down early in game six, and eventually lost 6-1.
The New York Yankees are back in first place after a 3-0 victory over the Atlanta Braves last night. Dominican Ivan Nova pitched seven innings of shutout ball, allowing only five hits. This was his fourth straight win, and he improved to 8-2 on the season in a game he said he didn’t have his best stuff. “My command of the fastball wasn’t there. Sometimes I wanted to go inside on lefties and I left the ball over the plate. When you don’t have your best stuff, you have to fight,” said Nova after the game.
One of the many highlights of the British Virgin Islands Football Association’s 2012 Awards Ceremony held on Saturday June 9, 2012, was the naming of Lavern Fahie as MVP of the recently concluded Women’s League. The Ceremony, which was held at Prospect Reef Hotel, was attended by the Minister responsible for Sport, the Honorable Myron Walwyn, sponsors, representatives from all the Men’s and Women’s clubs that took part in the 2011-12 season, as well as, the coaches and referees.
Joshua Pinard was crowned champion of the Men’s Open category when he defeated Paul De Verteuil in the championship match of the Senior National Squash Tournament, which concluded at the Cascadia club courts in St Ann’s, on Saturday. Pinard was challenged in the opening set but clinched a close 11-8 win over De Verteuil. From there, Pinard never looked back and went on to lift the senior national title with an 11-4, 11-6 win in the final. De Verteuil claimed silver in this division while Julian Chin won the bronze. Pinard advanced to the finals after an upset of multiple national and current Men’s champion, Colin Ramasra, in a hotly contested five-set game in the semi-finals. Pinard won the opening set 13-11 but went on to lose the next two 4-11, 6-11. Pinard was able to win the final two sets, 11-8, 11-4 to advance to the finals.
