One Caribbean Radio Sports Briefs for Monday, June 25, 2012, by Derrel “Jazz” Johnson

The New York Yankees defeated the New York Mets 6-5 last night to take the series two games to one and win five out of six against their crosstown rivals in this season’s Subway Series. Robinson Cano from the Dominican Republic gave the Yankees the lead for good with a solo home run in the top of the eighth inning.

After the Dominican Republic defeated Panama 79-62 and Puerto Rico topped Jamaica 103-89, the two Caribbean basketball titans met in the Centrobasket 2012 Finals, won by the John Calipari-coached Dominicans 80-72 last night. Jack Michael Martinez led the way with 23 points and 11 rebounds while guard Juan Coronado added 17 points. Francisco Garcia and Eulis Baez each scored 11 points. Minnesota Timberwolves guard JJ Barea led Puerto Rico with 18 points, while Santiago Daniel notched 16.

After some competitive play over the weekend, the semi finals are set in 2012 EuroCup. Portugal, who defeated the Czech Republic, will take on Spain Wednesday, who eliminated France over the weekend. Germany, who topped Greece, will battle Italy Thursday, who outlasted England on penalty kicks in a controversial game Sunday.

I went to my first WNBA game of the season and it was a very enjoyable experience. It was Dads and Daughters Day, and numerous New York Knicks, including JR Smith (with his adorable daughter), Cal Ramsey, Walt “Clyde” Frazier, John Starks and Earl “The Pearl” Monroe were all in attendance. Unfortunately, the Atlanta Dream defeated the New York Liberty 74-64.

Finally, Venus Williams was upset in the first round of Wimbledon. It was her first loss in the opening round since 1997.
