Serena Williams Wins Olympic Gold by Derrel “Jazz” Johnson

A little more than a month after winning Wimbledon on the same court in a win over Agnieszka Radwanska, Serena Williams defeated Maria Sharapova 6-0, 6-1 in the Olympics Women’s Tennis Finals to win gold for the United States.  It is her third Gold medal overall, having won Doubles twice with her sister Venus Williams, but her first in singles Olympic play.  Williams dominated the Gold Medal final as she did her previous matches, playing some of the best tennis of her career.  Serena is next scheduled to play in the US Open, which begins on Monday, August 27, 2012, in New York City.  Williams lost in the US Open Finals last year to Samantha Stosur.

Serena and Venus will play for their third Doubles title this weekend.
