Tennis superstar Maria Sharapova and former Los Angeles Laker and New Jersey Net Sasha Vujacic have broken off their engagement. In a press conference today following her victory over Mallory Burdette, she was asked if their relationship ended after Wimbledon. “No, it’s been since the end of spring actually. I was waiting for someone to actually ask me that question, but nobody did directly,” Sharapova responded with laughter.
Sharapova continued later to discuss the end of their relationship. “It was obviously a challenging decision, you know, from both of our ends. It was a really nice period of time for both of us, but, you know, our career schedules just made it extremely difficult to see each other with the traveling, and especially his career move to Turkey.” Vujacic hasn’t played in the NBA since the end of the 2010-2011 season, when he played for the New Jersey Nets. Sharapova was often in attendance at the Prudential Center.
Speaking of his play in Turkey, and it’s strain on their relationship, she said “you know, the playing there was a little bit different in terms of he wasn’t able to travel much. He wasn’t home one time during the 20 months that he was in Turkey, so that made it extremely difficut. But we have a tremendous amount of respect for each other. Still would love to call him as a friend. Yeah, we spent really great years together.”
Sharapova next plays at the US Open on Sunday in the fourth round.
