In the biggest fight of his career, Austin Trout dominated Miguel Cotto Saturday night to retain his WBA Light Middleweight Championship title at Madison Square Garden. Cotto, whose fights at Madison Square Garden have sold over 100,000 tickets, lost his first fight at the arena in eight bouts. The crowd of 13,096 was heavily behind Cotto, but he was not able to overcome the skillful Trout.
Two of the judges had the first six rounds of the fight even, but then had Trout winning the final six rounds, which seemed to be fairly accurate. A third judge had Trout winning every round, save one.
In earlier bouts, Golden Boy Promotions and Miguel Cotto Promotions protege Jayson Velez knocked out Salvador Sanchez II, nephew of Salvador Sanchez. In an ode to his uncle, Sanchez II wore the same ring attire worn by his uncle at Madison Square Garden on July 21, 1982, in his fight against Azumah Nelson.
Brooklyn native Danny Jacobs won his second fight in New York City in less than two months, defeating tough Irishman Chris Fitzpatrick when he was unable to come out of his corner after the fifth round. Jacobs, who changed his nickname from “The Golden Child” to “The Miracle Man”, defeated cancer during a one-year hiatus from boxing.
Also on the card, John Thompson defeated Elie Augustama, Eddie Gomez beat Luis Hernandez, Jorge Diaz was victorious over Victor Sanchez, and Michael Perez won his bout against Fernando Carcamo, all by unanimous decision. Jeffrey Fontanez knocked out Pedro Arcos in the second round, and Jorge Melendez was a winner via knock out over James
