Golden Boy Promotions and Don King Productions held a press conference at Barclays Center today to announce their fight scheduled for Saturday, March 9, 2013, between the legendary Bernard Hopkins and IBF Light Hevyweight Champion Tavoris “Thunder” Cloud. In the fight, Hopkins will attempt to break his own record and become, once again, the oldest fighter in history to win a world title. The fight will be shown like on HBO World Championship Boxing.
This will be the 20th fight for Bernard Hopkins on HBO World Championship Boxing, who had the #1 rated HBO fight in 2011 versus Jean Pascal and #2 rated fight in 2012, versus Chad Dawson. It is a certain that Hopkins will bring fans to the television sets and Barclays Center, hosting it’s third boxing card in the infancy of Barclays Center. “It’s kinda weird to get called out as a champion, but he is different” Thunder Cloud said about the Hopkins team contracting him about the fight.
Don King was also on hand, and in his opening remarks, thanked Jay-Z and Beyonce for the arena. He also talked about Cloud putting an end to the career of Hopkins, and stated “we want Bernard to retire healthy,” adding later “It’s time to put you out to rest and reside.” King also asked for Golden Boy Promotions founder Oscar De La Hoya, who was scheduled to be at the press conference but was unable to attend because of influenza. “He told me he wanted a rematch with Tito, we’re ready to give it to him,” King said in reference to De La Hoya’s loss to Felix “Tito” Trinidad on September 18, 1999.
In comments made before the press conference, De La Hoya discussed the fight. “Just when you think you’ve seen it all, Bernard Hopkins continues to amaze me and I’m looking forward to seeing what he’s going to do next at Barclays Center in March. “Tavoris Cloud is a tough test and a proud champion and with his aggressive style and power, he’s going to push Bernard like never before.”
“This is a history-making fight,” said Don King, President of Don King Productions. “I made history with a guy from Brooklyn by the name of Mike Tyson. Now I have a mini-Mike Tyson in undefeated IBF Light Heavyweight World Champion Tavoris Cloud who will fight at Barclays Center in Brooklyn on March 9. It will be an exciting evening.”
Of the Cloud, Hopkin’s trainer Naazim Richardson spoke of his lack of media attention. “You may not be familiar with Tavoris Cloud, but I’m familiar with him. He’s an exciting fighter. He’s focused and very dangerous. I know what this kid is capable of doing. He’s going to be up for fighting a legend.
Cloud himself talked candidly about the fight itself and fighting a legend. “People ask me if I’m worried about Bernard’s experience, his tricks and this and that. He might have more tricks than me, but I’m going to throw punches. You have to throw punches to win fights. I’m definitely going to win the fight by throwing punches.
Tickets go on sale for the fight on Friday online and at Barclays Center’s box office. A month earlier at the arena, Golden Boy Promotions also has a card featuring Danny Garcia versus Brooklynite Zab Judah in the main event. Tickets are on sale now.
